Testicular Biopsy

A testicular biopsy is a medical procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from the testicles for the purpose of extracting sperms or for diagnostic purposes. It is a one-day procedure performed by our urologists. In the context of infertility, a testicular biopsy may be performed to investigate the cause of male infertility and assess the potential for sperm production. If the sample yielded sperm, it can be freezed for later use.

When is Testicular Biopsy Indicated?

Azoospermia: If a man has no sperm in his ejaculate (azoospermia), a testicular biopsy may be recommended to check if sperm are being produced in the testicles.

Oligospermia: In cases of very low sperm count (oligospermia), a biopsy may be performed to evaluate the testicular sperm production.

What are the types of Testicular Biopsy?

Percutaneous Biopsy: This is a less invasive procedure where a small needle is inserted through the scrotum to collect a tissue sample.

Open Biopsy: In some cases, an open surgical procedure may be performed to obtain a larger tissue sample. This is often done when a more extensive examination is needed.

How is Sperm Retrieved?

If sperm are found in the biopsy sample they will be collected and used immediately for assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or may be frozen for use in the future.

What are the Risks and Complications?

Testicular biopsy is generally considered a safe procedure, but as with any surgery, there are risks such as bleeding, infection, and pain.

What is the Post-Biopsy Recovery Time?

Recovery time varies, but many men can resume normal activities within a few days to a week after the procedure.

What are the Treatment Options?

Depending on the findings, the medical team can recommend appropriate infertility treatments, such as hormonal therapy, surgical interventions, or assisted reproductive technologies.
It’s important to note that while a testicular biopsy can provide valuable information, it does not guarantee successful fertility treatments. in some cases of azoospermia sperm may not be found in testicular tissue retrieved by biopsy. The decision to undergo a testicular biopsy should be made in consultation with a fertility specialist after a thorough evaluation of the individual’s medical history and fertility issues.
