Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly into the female partner’s uterus by a special catheter to increase the chances of fertilization around the time of ovulation
IUI is indicated for couples with:
IUI involves basically 3 steps
Ovulation Induction
The female partner might be given medications (oral or injections) for an average period of 8-12 days to stimulate the ovaries to produce and release eggs. She will be followed up with serial ultrasounds to track the growth of the follicles. When follicles are mature she will be given a trigger injection to induce ovulation. Finally, she will be scheduled for the procedure on the day of the ovulation. This process helps ensure that there are mature eggs available for fertilization during the IUI procedure, thus increasing the chances of conception.
Sperm Preparation/ Sperm Washing
On the day of the procedure, a semen sample is collected from the male partner and processed in the laboratory. Through a specialized technique, the sperm is separated from the seminal fluid and concentrated to select the healthiest and most active sperm cells.
Procedure of Insemination
The prepared sperm sample is inserted directly into the female partner’s uterus using a fine catheter.
No need for anesthesia.
Following the insemination, the woman may rest for a few minutes before leaving the clinic.
A less invasive procedure compared to other fertility treatments, making it relatively comfortable and straightforward.
Accessible and simple, often performed in a doctor’s office without the need for surgical intervention.
Available for repeated cycles, offering the opportunity for multiple attempts to achieve pregnancy thus increasing the chances of success.
